Melbourne Victory DWL

The Victory are not as convincing as they were last season, their midweek FFA cup game against Non league Hume City FC ended 3-0, but those goals came late in the game, once Muscart started to strengthen the team with some of the heavyweights that were rested on the bench.

Besart Berisha drew the foul in that game and went on to score from the penalty, but he might find the Phoenix back line less naive, and will have to work harder if he wants to get on the score sheet. But they got the result and that was a good moral booster on the back of their shock defeat to Newcastle Jets the previous weekend.

Finkler has scored in three of his last four appearances against Phoenix, and will be looking forward to coming up against them to break his goal scoring drought.

It’s a clash of the teacher and the student as Kevin Muscat takes on his mentor Ernie Merrick, but the distraction of the FFA Cup final five days later may overshadow this match.

Wellington Phoenix LWW

After a tremendous victory against Brisbane Roar last weekend , the AFF dropped a bombshell on Monday by not renewing the Phoenix 10 year licence, offering a 4 year extension instead. The club has rejected the offer and let’s hope both parties carry on the discussions.

On the field, Ernie Merrich knows he is up against it, as the results against the Victory have been poor. This will not change his stance, and expect the phoenix to come out of the blocks.

Andrew Durante returns from injury to sure up the defence and Matthew Ridenton is promoted at the expense of Kwabena Appiah, but this game will be about goals, and Michael McGlinchey, Jeffrey Sarpong, Roly Bonevacia and Roy Krishna have plenty of fire power to menace the Victory goal..

The Betting Verdict

The timing of this match is to coincide with the Melbourne racing carnival with the big race being tomorrow, so there should be a good crowd.

Melbourne Victory have an exceptional record against the Phoenix, they have won 10 of their last 12 encounters against them, but equally important they have only once failed to score two goals or more in a match.

My only concern is that Victory have to play the FFA cup final on Saturday, and that may be the players main focus going into this match. I’m picking both teams to score, in a high tempo game.

The Pick :

Melbourne Victory 2- 1. Wellington Phoenix
