FC Sion Vs Rubin Kazan

17/9/15

Sion host Kazan in the first round of fixtures in Group B and will be hoping to get off to a positive start in this years Europa League.

Swiss side Sion reached the Europa League playoffs in both 2009 and 2010 but were knocked out by Fenerbahce and Celtic respectively. The team have failed to reach the Europa League since but have managed to qualify this season thanks to their victory in the Swiss equivalent of the FA Cup last season. Drawn against Kazan, Liverpool and Bordeaux the team will face a real test of their metal over the next few months and will have to be at their best to get out of the group.

Rubin Kazan have come through a couple of qualifying games to reach the group stages of the Europa league. The team beat Strum Graz 4-3 on aggregate before overcoming FK Rabotnicki of Macedonia 2-1 over two legs. The side have failed to impress so far this season, they made heavy weather of both qualifiers and have managed to take only six points from their first 8 league matches. Currently without a permanent manager, caretaker Valeriy Chaly is unlikely to be offered the job full time, but could guide his charges to an away win as a parting gift to the Kazan fans.

This will be the first meeting between these two sides so there is no previous form for us to mull over. However, Kazan do have some history in this competition, the team reached the quarters back in 2012 but were ultimately knocked out by eventual winners Chelsea, losing 5-4 on aggregate. Sion will be experiencing the group stages of a major European competition for the first time and could use the excitement and expectation that brings to their advantage.

Sion have had the better start domestically and with Kazan less than impressive in their previous two Europa league outings this season I fancy the home side to grab a massive three points. I think we will see a few goals in this one so back over 2.5 to be scored and then go for Moussa Konate to continue his good start to the season and bag his sixth goal in nine games.
